COLUMBIA, SC · PROJECT PLANNING
Understand the scope.
Then compare the price.
A stump-grinding price is only useful when you know what it includes. Your final price depends on stump size, access, grinding depth, and cleanup. Request a project-specific quote and confirm the included work before scheduling.
Six questions that make quotes comparable
- How is size measured? Share the widest ground-level measurement and photos. Ask whether exposed roots are part of the measured area.
- How many stumps? Ask for both the total job price and the effect of adding other stumps during the same visit.
- What access is needed? Provide the narrowest opening and describe slopes, steps, and soft surfaces.
- What depth is included? Explain whether you plan to seed, landscape, or build. Have the contractor confirm that the proposed scope fits that use.
- What happens to the chips? Compare grinding only, chip removal, backfill, and restoration separately.
- Are there minimum or travel charges? These can change the total for a small job or a site outside a provider’s usual route.
Ask for a written scope
Request a quote identifying the stumps, included roots, finished depth, cleanup, exclusions, total price, and payment terms. Confirm the contractor’s insurance and who is responsible for arranging utility locating.
Grinding versus extraction
Grinding reduces the stump in place; it does not necessarily remove the entire root system. If a foundation, driveway, or other construction is planned, ask the responsible project professional what removal and ground preparation are required before choosing a method.
